How to Hang a Plug-In Pendant Light with No Wiring

DrMaker3D

You don't need a junction box, an electrician, or your landlord's permission to hang a plug-in pendant light. A pendant with a plug-in cord kit hangs from a simple ceiling hook and plugs into a regular wall outlet — the whole job takes about 20 minutes with a drill, a ladder, and a tape measure. It's the easiest way to get real overhead light in a rental, a corner with no ceiling fixture, or a room where hardwiring isn't worth the cost.

Every pendant in our pendant and ceiling light collection is available with a plug-in cord kit in black or white, and because the shades are 3D printed from PLA, most weigh under a pound — well within the rating of a basic swag hook.

What comes in a plug-in cord kit

A plug-in pendant kit is three parts: a socket for the bulb, a long fabric-covered cord (typically 12–15 feet), and a standard wall plug, usually with an inline on/off switch. The shade attaches to the socket, the cord runs up to a ceiling hook and then over to the wall, and the plug goes into any outlet. Nothing connects to your home's wiring.

When you order a pendant like our CLARA woven pendant, choose the plug-in kit option and it arrives ready to hang — shade, cord, and hardware in one box.

How to hang a plug-in pendant light, step by step

1. Pick the spot. Hold the shade roughly where you want it (a second set of hands helps) and mark the ceiling point directly above with painter's tape.

2. Check what's above the drywall. Run a stud finder over the mark. If there's a joist, you can screw a swag hook straight in. If it's hollow drywall — the more common case — use a swag hook with a toggle or spring-wing anchor rated for at least 10 pounds. That's 10x the weight of most PLA shades, which gives you a comfortable margin.

3. Install the hook. For a joist: drill a 3/32-inch pilot hole and thread the hook in by hand. For drywall: drill the hole size listed on the anchor package (usually 3/8 to 1/2 inch), feed the toggle through, and tighten until the hook sits flush against the ceiling.

4. Set the drop height. Measure from the ceiling to where the bottom of the shade should sit (height rules below), then loop the cord over the hook at that length. Most kits let you wrap or knot the cord above the hook to lock the height.

5. Swag the cord to the wall. Install a second small hook near the top of the wall above your outlet, drape the cord over to it, and let the cord run down the wall to the plug. A gentle drape looks intentional; a tight diagonal line looks like an afterthought.

6. Add the bulb and plug in. Use an LED bulb only — they run cool, which is what 3D printed shades are designed for. Flip the inline switch and you're done.

How high to hang it

The numbers that matter:

  • Over a dining table or desk: 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade.
  • Over a nightstand or side table: bottom of the shade about 20 inches (51 cm) above the table surface — low enough to feel like a lamp, high enough to see under.
  • In open space or a corner: keep at least 7 feet (213 cm) of clearance from floor to shade bottom anywhere people walk.
  • Reading corner: 40–48 inches (102–122 cm) above the seat cushion puts light on the page without glare in your eyes.

If you're not sure what shade diameter fits your spot, our pendant light size guide has inch-by-inch tables for kitchen islands, dining tables, and entryways.

Renter-friendly notes

Two small ceiling holes are all this method leaves behind — one for the swag hook, one for the wall hook. Both patch in five minutes with spackle when you move out, which is a far easier conversation than explaining a hardwired fixture.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Skip adhesive hooks on the ceiling. Even the ones rated for a few pounds are rated for shear (hanging on a wall), not for a load pulling straight down. A $2 toggle anchor is the right tool.
  • Weigh your shade choice honestly. Our PLA shades run roughly 0.3–1.5 pounds depending on size, so any 10-pound hook works. If you're hanging something heavier from another maker, match the anchor rating to the fixture.
  • Don't stretch the cord tight or pinch it under furniture. Leave slack at every turn.
  • Use the inline switch, or plug into a smart plug for phone or voice control — a nice upgrade since there's no wall switch involved.

Making the cord look good

The cord is part of the look, not something to fight. Fabric-covered cords in black or white read as intentional against most walls. If you want it quieter, paintable cord covers and small cable clips that match your wall color make the vertical run nearly disappear. Some people lean into it instead and let the swagged drape become part of the room's line work — that works especially well with statement shades.

The OFELIA chandelier pendant above is the kind of piece people assume required an electrician. It didn't — it's on a hook and a cord.

The short version

Find the joist or use a 10-pound toggle anchor, hang a swag hook, set your height (30–36 inches over a table, 7 feet over walkways), swag the cord to the wall, use an LED bulb, plug in. Every shade we print in our Connecticut studio comes in 30+ colors and ships with the plug-in kit if you want it — browse the full pendant collection here.
