A pendant light in the wrong size is the fastest way to make a good room feel off — too small and it disappears, too large and it crowds everything under it. This pendant light size guide gives you the actual numbers: how wide a shade to choose and how high to hang it over a kitchen island, a dining table, and an entryway, in both inches and centimeters. No guesswork, no design jargon.

The two measurements that decide everything

Every choice comes down to two numbers: the diameter of the shade and the hanging height — the gap from the bottom of the shade to the surface below it. Diameter controls how the fixture reads in the room. Hanging height controls whether people can see across the table, sit without ducking, and walk under it safely. Our 3D-printed shades, like the ECLIPSE, run from 7 inches (18 cm) to 12.5 inches (32 cm) across, which covers most single- and multi-pendant setups.

How to size a pendant light for a kitchen island

Over an island, use a row of two or three evenly spaced pendants rather than one. The combined width of the shades should equal about one-half to two-thirds of the island's length. Leave 6 to 12 inches (15–30 cm) of clear space at each end, and space the pendants 24 to 30 inches (61–76 cm) apart, measured center to center.

Hang the bottom of each shade 30 to 36 inches (76–91 cm) above the countertop. That keeps the bulb out of sightlines while pooling light on the work surface.

Sizing pendants over a dining table

The goal at a dining table is to light a span roughly one-half to two-thirds of the table's length. A single wide shade suits a small round or square table; a row of two or three shades suits anything longer than about 48 inches (122 cm). Because our shades top out at 12.5 inches (32 cm), longer tables look best with a cluster or a straight row rather than one oversized fixture.

Hang the bottom of the shade 28 to 34 inches (71–86 cm) above the tabletop with a standard 8-foot ceiling. For every additional foot of ceiling height, raise the fixture about 3 inches (8 cm).

Entryway and foyer pendants

For an entry, there is a simple starting formula: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that sum as the shade diameter in inches.

Since a single printed shade maxes out near 12.5 inches, hit larger targets with a tight cluster of two or three shades. In a standard-height entry, keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet (213 cm) above the floor. In a two-story foyer, center the pendant in the window if there is one, and never let it hang below the second-floor landing. If it hangs over a console table, treat it like a dining pendant and center it on the tabletop.

Hanging height rules in one place

The one adjustment to remember: add about 3 inches of drop for every foot your ceiling rises above 8 feet, so the fixture stays in proportion with the taller room.

A 10-second shortcut

When you just need a starting point for a single ambient pendant in any room, add the room's length and width in feet and read the total as inches of diameter. A 10-by-13-foot room lands around 23 inches — which, in our line, means a cluster of two or three shades rather than one. From there, adjust down if the fixture will hang over furniture and up if the ceiling is high.
