A pendant light in the wrong size is the fastest way to make a good room feel off — too small and it disappears, too large and it crowds everything under it. This pendant light size guide gives you the actual numbers: how wide a shade to choose and how high to hang it over a kitchen island, a dining table, and an entryway, in both inches and centimeters. No guesswork, no design jargon.

The two measurements that decide everything

Every choice comes down to two numbers: the diameter of the shade and the hanging height — the gap from the bottom of the shade to the surface below it. Diameter controls how the fixture reads in the room. Hanging height controls whether people can see across the table, sit without ducking, and walk under it safely. How to size a pendant light for a kitchen island

Over an island, use a row of two or three evenly spaced pendants rather than one. The combined width of the shades should equal about one-half to two-thirds of the island's length. Leave 6 to 12 inches (15–30 cm) of clear space at each end, and space the pendants 24 to 30 inches (61–76 cm) apart, measured center to center.

Hang the bottom of each shade 30 to 36 inches (76–91 cm) above the countertop. That keeps the bulb out of sightlines while pooling light on the work surface.

Sizing pendants over a dining table

The goal at a dining table is to light a span roughly one-half to two-thirds of the table's length. A single wide shade suits a small round or square table; a row of two or three shades suits anything longer than about 48 inches (122 cm). A long table can also carry one large piece on its own: REINA at 18.9 inches (48 cm) or ONDINA at 21.3 inches (54 cm) reads as one object where a row reads as a line.

Hang the bottom of the shade 28 to 34 inches (71–86 cm) above the tabletop with a standard 8-foot ceiling. For every additional foot of ceiling height, raise the fixture about 3 inches (8 cm).

Entryway and foyer pendants

For an entry, there is a simple starting formula: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that sum as the shade diameter in inches.

Targets in the 18 to 22 inch range are covered by a single oversized piece, REINA at 18.9 inches or ONDINA at 21.3 inches. Above that, reach the number with a tight cluster of two or three shades. In a standard-height entry, keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet (213 cm) above the floor. In a two-story foyer, center the pendant in the window if there is one, and never let it hang below the second-floor landing. If it hangs over a console table, treat it like a dining pendant and center it on the tabletop.

The one adjustment to remember: add about 3 inches of drop for every foot your ceiling rises above 8 feet, so the fixture stays in proportion with the taller room.

A 10-second shortcut

When you need a starting point for a single ambient pendant in any room, add the room's length and width in feet and read the total as inches of diameter. A 10-by-13-foot room lands around 23 inches, which ONDINA at 21.3 inches will hold on its own, or a pair of smaller shades will cover. From there, adjust down if the fixture will hang over furniture and up if the ceiling is high.

About this light

The LOLA wraps a rhythmic geometric mesh around a clean cylindrical drum, throwing a patterned wash of light across a dining table, an island, or an entryway. Mid-century in its proportions, and built one at a time in a small Connecticut studio.

One edition

There is no standard version. Every LOLA is made to a single specification — formed slowly, in fine layers, then hand-finished so the surface reads as one continuous shape rather than a stack of lines. It is the only way we make it.

Five sizes

From a seven-inch accent shade to a twelve-and-a-half-inch centrepiece. The size guide will tell you which one suits your ceiling height and the surface beneath it.

Ten finishes

Ten, chosen from hundreds and held to a single matte family, so every piece in the collection belongs to the same family of light.

Five let the light through and become lanterns — Alabaster, Sand, Bone, Ash and Saddle. Five hold it back and read as form, casting the mesh pattern across the ceiling and walls — Terracotta, Olive, Walnut, Ink and Graphite.

Materials

The shade and its inner diffuser are formed in a matte, plant-derived polymer. The matte surface is the point: it scatters light across the print so the piece reads as one continuous form rather than a stack of layers.

The socket cup is a separate black PETG fitting, the same on every piece in the collection — a tougher, more heat-tolerant material exactly where it sits closest to the lampholder, and a constant dark detail against all ten finishes.

Also made in translucent

The same form is offered as the LOLA Lucent, formed in translucent PLA. It is not a finish of this piece but a separate one: the material changes what the shade does with light, turning a patterned wash into a glow that comes from within — and it is where the collection's colour lives, against these ten neutrals.
