PLA 3D Printing Service

PLA (polylactic acid) is the workhorse of custom 3D printing — and the material we recommend for most projects. It prints with the crispest detail of any filament we carry, comes in our full range of 80+ colors and finishes, and every piece is printed to order — nothing mass-produced, nothing wasted.

PLA is derived from renewable plant sugars (like corn starch) rather than petroleum. That said, it's still a durable everyday plastic — not readily home-compostable or curbside-recyclable in practice — so it's best kept and enjoyed as a lasting piece rather than treated as disposable.

Why print in PLA

PLA delivers excellent stiffness and surface quality at the lowest cost per gram. It's the best material for anything decorative or dimensional: lighting, home decor, figurines, architectural models, jigs, and prototypes where form matters more than heat resistance. It's also the only material we stock in specialty finishes — silk, glow-in-the-dark, metallic, wood-filled, and marble.

PLA material properties

Property Rating
Tensile strength Good — strong in most everyday applications
Stiffness Excellent — the stiffest standard filament
Heat resistance Limited — softens around 130°F (55°C) (avoid hot cars, dishwashers)
UV / outdoor use Fair — fine indoors; fades and gets brittle outdoors
Flexibility Low — rigid, can be brittle under sharp impact
Detail & finish Excellent — sharpest detail and cleanest surfaces

Best uses for PLA

  • Pendant lights, lampshades, and home decor (low-heat LED bulbs)
  • Visual prototypes, product models, and architecture concepts
  • Figurines, tabletop pieces, chess sets, and gifts
  • Organizers, stands, and light-duty brackets

Colors and pricing

PLA Basic and PLA Matte print at $0.10 per gram. Specialty finishes print at $0.12–$0.13 per gram (Silk $0.12; Glow, Metallic, Wood, and Marble $0.13). With 80+ colors and finishes, PLA has by far the widest palette of any material we offer. Every quote includes machine time and hand inspection, with a $15 minimum order.

Design tips for PLA

  • 20% infill suits decor and prototypes; use 50%+ for functional parts.
  • Wall thickness of 1.2 mm+ prints reliably; fine details down to 0.4 mm are possible.
  • Keep finished parts away from sustained heat above 120°F (50°C) — choose PETG or ABS for hot environments.
