The short answer
Most custom 3D printing services (ours included) price by material used plus machine time. At DrMaker3D, basic PLA starts at $0.10 per gram, with a $15 minimum order. A palm-sized decorative print might weigh 30–80 grams; a large lampshade or helmet-sized piece can run several hundred grams. That means many everyday custom prints land between $15 and $60 — far less than most people expect.
What actually drives the price
1. Material choice
Material is the biggest lever. A rough guide from least to most expensive:
- PLA — the workhorse for decor, prototypes, and gifts. Affordable, crisp detail, huge color range.
- PETG — tougher and more heat-tolerant; great for functional parts and outdoor use.
- TPU — flexible rubber-like prints (phone cases, gaskets, wearables).
- ABS and ASA — engineering plastics for durable, UV-stable parts.
- Nylon, polycarbonate, and carbon fiber blends — the strongest (and priciest) options for demanding functional parts.

2. Size and infill
Price scales with grams, and grams scale with volume. A part printed at 20% infill (plenty for decorative and most functional pieces) uses far less material than a solid print. Scaling a model down 20% can cut its weight nearly in half — worth knowing if you're price-sensitive.
3. Print time
Tall, complex, or very fine-detail prints tie up a machine longer, which adds machine-time cost. Simple shapes print fast and cheap.
4. Finishing and color
Standard prints come cleanly finished. Premium fine-layer printing, multi-color jobs, or hand-finishing add cost but produce showcase-quality results — the right call for gifts and display pieces.
